1.) Vision Correction Surgery
If you are wearing glasses or contact lenses you must have heard of eye vision correction laser surgeries like LASIK. These surgeries can bring back 20/20 vision and reduce or end the need for glasses or contacts lenses.
Lasik:
LASIK (Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is an outpatient surgery which would not take more then 15 minutes, this laser refractive eye surgery is the most widely used to correct vision problems. This is an alternative to glasses or contact lenses.
During this surgery, a cutting laser is used to precisely change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of your eye (cornea) to improve vision.
In case of a normal vision, the cornea bends (refracts) light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with nearsightedness , farsightedness or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision. Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea itself also will provide the necessary refraction.
Recovery:
Recovery from LASIK surgery is very quick and as most the patients can resume their normal activities by the next day. Your vision can be dramatically better and functional before leaving the office.
You may experience some discomfort or mild burning for a few hours after surgery. You will be given some pain medication and eye drops to use after the procedure.
Candidate for Vision Correctness Surgery:
Laser surgery helps people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have an oddly shaped cornea, called astigmatism. It might work for you if
* You are between 21-70 years old.
* Your number have not changed for at least one year.
* Your eyes and overall health are good.
If you have diabetes, HIV, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis, talk with your ophthalmologist about your best options. Some of the other condition which you doctor may consider are Dry eyes, large pupils, or thin corneas.
This treatment may not be a good option for people with keratoconus, a cornea disorder.
You May Still Need Glasses:
You may still need to wear glasses to drive at night or read. If you have a high prescription number, chances are you may still need glasses after laser surgery. Lens implants might be better. Standard laser vision surgeries also don’t treat presbyopia, the blurry close-up vision that starts after 40. "Blended" or monovision procedures are an option for that.
2.) Cataract Surgery
In case you have a cataract, your vision gets cloudy, blurred, double or dim vision. This condition will make you difficult to read, work on computers or drive in the night or reading the sign boards on the road. If this is the case, please let your ophthalmologist advice you to have a surgery to remove the lens of your eye and replace it with an artificial one. Cataract surgery is a very common and a safe procedure with good results.
Surgery:
Your ophthalmologist will do some tests to measure the size and shape of your eye. This will help them to choose the best type of artificial lens for your eyes.
During the surgery you will be awake as the doctor will numb your eye with medicine for you not to feel any pain. They might as well give you medication to help you relax.
The surgery generally lasts for less than an hour. A tiny cut in the front of your eye will be made with the help of a laser. With this, they'll put in a small needle type tool to break up the cataract and gently suction it out. They will put in the new lens, which is made of plastic, silicone, or acrylic, and close the cut. The best lens used is Alcon.
This is an outpatient procedure; however, you will need someone to drive you home or to take a taxi.
If you have cataracts in both the eyes, the procedure in each eye is carried out with at least one week break between each surgery. This gives enough time for the first eye surgery to heal.
Some of the types of lenses available include:
Fixed-focus monofocal: This type of lens has a single focus strength for distance vision. Reading will generally require the use of reading glasses.
Accommodating-focus monofocal: Although these lenses only have a single focusing strength, they can respond to eye muscle movements and shift focus to near or distant objects.
Multifocal: These lenses are similar to glasses with bifocal or progressive lenses. Different areas of the lens have different focusing strengths, allowing for near, medium and far vision.
Astigmatism correction (toric): If you have a significant astigmatism, a toric lens can help correct your vision.
Discuss the benefits and risks of the different types of IOLs with your eye surgeon to determine what's best for you.
Side Effect
Side effects are very rare from this surgery, some of which are infection, swelling, bleeding retinal detachment and drooping eyes.
After Surgery
Your doctor will give you instruction to take care the eyes like not to bend over, drive, life heavy things which put pressure on eyes. The doctor will prescribe medications to be used. Your eyes will be fully healed in about 8 weeks’ time. In some cases, you may still need to wear glasses.
3.) Other Treatments:
Astigmatism:
Astigmatism is a vision problem that occurs as a result of incompatible curvature of the cornea or the eye lens due to its structure.
This condition can be treated with use of contact lenses, glasses or laser surgery.
Glaucoma (Eye Pressure) Treatment
Doctors use different types of treatment for glaucoma, including medicines (usually eye drops), laser treatment, and surgery.
Medicines: Prescription eye drops are the most common treatment. They lower the pressure in your eye and prevent damage to your optic nerve.
Laser treatment: To lower your eye pressure, doctors can use lasers to help the fluid drain out of your eye. It’s a simple procedure that your doctor can do in the office.
Surgery: If medicines and laser treatment don’t work, your doctor might suggest surgery. There are several different types of surgery that can help the fluid drain out of your eye.
Dry Eye Treatment
Dry eye occurs when the quality and quantity of tears are not sufficient. When tears are not sufficient, the surface of the eye is not moistened sufficiently, and a deficiency in the biochemical components of the tears causes inadequate nutrition of the cornea, apart from adequate moisturization. Deficiency of one of the 3 basic components of tears (mucus, water, and oil) causes rapid evaporation of tears.
Treatment for dry eye usually depends on what’s causing your symptoms. There are a few different types of treatment that can ease your symptoms and help keep your eyes healthy.
Over-the-counter eye drops: The most common treatment for mild dry eye is a type of eye drops called artificial tears. You can get these eye drops without a prescription. There are also over-the-counter moisturizing gels and ointments that may help your eyes feel better.
Prescription medicines: If your dry eye is more serious, your eye doctor may give you a prescription for medicines called cyclosporine (Restasis) or lifitegrast (Xiidra). These medicines are both types of eye drops that can help your eyes make more tears.
Lifestyle changes: If something in your life or your environment is causing your dry eye, or making it worse, your doctor may suggest changes to help protect your eyes.
Tear duct plugs: If tears are draining too quickly from your eyes, your doctor may suggest putting special plugs (called punctal plugs) in your tear ducts (small holes in the inner corners of your eyes). These plugs can help keep your tears in your eyes.
Surgery: In some cases, dry eye can happen because your lower eyelids are too loose, causing tears to drain too quickly out of your eye. If this is the cause of your dry eye, your eye doctor may suggest surgery to fix your eyelids and help your tears stay on your eyes. This treatment is not very common.
